About the Role:
My client, a leading player in the sea shipping industry based in Rotterdam, is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Technical Superintendent to oversee the technical management of their fleet. The role requires a deep understanding of ship operations, maintenance, and compliance with maritime regulations. You will be responsible for ensuring vessels are technically sound, safe, and operated efficiently while adhering to the highest standards of quality and safety.
Key Responsibilities:
- Fleet Management: Oversee the technical operations of assigned vessels, ensuring they are well-maintained and compliant with industry standards and regulations.
- Maintenance & Repair: Plan, coordinate, and supervise preventive maintenance, repairs, and dry-docking activities to minimize vessel downtime and ensure operational efficiency.
- Inspections & Audits: Conduct regular vessel inspections to ensure compliance with international maritime standards (ISM, SOLAS, MARPOL), flag state, and class requirements.
- Budgeting & Cost Control: Prepare and manage the technical budgets for assigned vessels, ensuring cost-effective maintenance without compromising safety and performance.
- Technical Support: Provide technical advice and solutions to the crew and onshore staff for any vessel-related issues, offering prompt support in case of operational challenges or emergencies.
- Project Management: Coordinate technical projects such as retrofitting, upgrading, and modification work to enhance vessel performance.
- Contractor & Supplier Liaison: Work closely with external contractors, shipyards, and suppliers to ensure quality, timely repairs and equipment procurement.
- Crew Training & Support: Collaborate with vessel crews to ensure they are well-trained in technical operations and maintenance procedures.
- Compliance: Ensure all vessels meet international safety and environmental regulations and maintain up-to-date documentation in compliance with maritime law.
- Reporting: Maintain detailed reports on vessel performance, maintenance activities, and operational status, communicating regularly with senior management.
Qualifications and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Marine Engineering, Naval Architecture, or related field.
- At least 5-7 years of experience in a technical superintendent role or as a chief engineer in the shipping industry.
- Strong knowledge of maritime regulations (ISM, SOLAS, MARPOL, etc.) and class requirements.
- Experience in overseeing dry-docking and major repairs.
- Strong budgeting and cost management experience.
- Proficient in using fleet management software and other relevant IT systems.
- Excellent communication and leadership skills to work effectively with diverse teams onboard and onshore.
- Ability to travel internationally on short notice for vessel inspections and urgent technical matters.
- Problem-solving mindset with a proactive approach to managing technical issues.
