The Dredging & Construction Project Superintendent is a field-based management position responsible for the day-to-day supervision, coordination, and oversight of dredging and marine construction projects. Working under the direction of the Project Manager and/or Operations Manager, the role supports projects from pre-bid and preparation stages through mobilisation, execution, demobilisation, and close-out. The Project Superintendent coordinates field personnel, engineers, dredging operations, equipment, work assignments, production activities, procurement, and site reporting to ensure projects are delivered safely, efficiently, and in accordance with approved plans, specifications, schedules, budgets, and client requirements. The position requires strong leadership, communication, problem-solving, and decision-making skills and may involve extended travel and periods working at remote project locations.
Key Responsibilities:
- Participate in pre-bid meetings, site assessments, estimating activities, and early project planning to support successful project execution.
- Review and interpret project plans, specifications, construction documents, schedules, and other technical requirements.
- Develop mobilisation plans and support the preparation of project work plans, budgets, dredging strategies, schedules, resource requirements, and execution plans.
- Assist with the selection and allocation of project personnel, equipment, vessels, and other resources required to execute the work.
- Coordinate and oversee project mobilisation, site setup, daily work assignments, production activities, teardown, and demobilisation.
- Supervise project and field engineers and coordinate closely with dredge superintendents to establish and monitor dredging assignments and priorities.
- Manage field crew and staffing requirements, ensuring appropriate personnel and resources are available to meet project needs.
- Monitor project production, analyse operational performance, identify opportunities for improvement, and implement measures to maximise productivity and efficiency.
- Maintain accurate internal and external reporting, including daily logs, production reports, safety documentation, environmental reporting, and client communications.
- Support financial and procurement management by following purchasing procedures and monitoring project costs, including labour, fuel, consumables, equipment, and other field expenses.
Requirements & Qualifications:
- Demonstrable experience supervising dredging, marine construction, civil construction, or similar field-based projects, including projects valued at approximately $10 million or more.
- Strong knowledge of construction documentation and the ability to read, interpret, and analyse plans, specifications, drawings, and project requirements.
- Proven experience supervising project personnel, field engineers, crews, contractors, and other site-based teams.
- Strong analytical, organisational, planning, and decision-making skills, with the ability to respond effectively to changing field conditions.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with project teams, management, clients, contractors, and other stakeholders.
- Ability to enforce and promote company policies, procedures, quality standards, and established project requirements.
- Strong commitment to safety and environmental standards, with the ability to identify hazards and ensure safe working practices across active project sites.
- Ability to manage competing priorities, maintain composure under pressure, and make timely decisions in a demanding field environment.
- Willingness and ability to travel and work away from home for extended periods, including at remote project locations.
- Dependable, self-motivated, results-focused, and committed to teamwork and professional standards; ability to obtain required site or maritime credentials where applicable.
