Marine Propulsion Field Engineer

Location: Fort Lauderdale, Florida Job

Type: Full-Time

Hours: 40 hours per week + Overtime

Available Travel: Approximately 50% Domestic & International Travel

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Marine Propulsion Field Engineer to join our growing service team based in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. This is a hands-on mechanical engineering role responsible for the inspection, troubleshooting, repair, overhaul, installation, and commissioning of marine propulsion equipment onboard commercial vessels.

The ideal candidate will have strong experience working with propulsion systems including shaft lines, stern tubes, thrusters, azimuth propulsion units, bearings, seals, couplings, and associated mechanical equipment. This position requires extensive travel to customer sites, shipyards, and ports throughout the United States and internationally.

Key Responsibilities

* Perform inspections, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs on marine propulsion systems.

* Service and overhaul shaft line systems, stern tube arrangements, bearings, seals, couplings, and alignment systems.

* Diagnose and repair tunnel thrusters, azimuth thrusters, CPP systems, and associated propulsion equipment.

* Carry out mechanical installations, commissioning, and sea trials.

* Perform shaft alignment using laser alignment equipment and other precision measurement tools.

* Interpret engineering drawings, technical manuals, and OEM service documentation.

* Prepare detailed service reports and recommend corrective actions to customers.

* Work closely with vessel crews, shipyards, project managers, and technical teams to ensure projects are completed safely and efficiently.

* Ensure compliance with company safety standards and customer procedures.

* Support emergency vessel breakdowns and planned maintenance projects.

Required Qualifications

* Previous experience servicing marine propulsion systems.

* Strong knowledge of: Shaft lines, Stern tubes, Azimuth propulsion units, Tunnel thrusters, Controllable Pitch Propellers (CPP), Fixed Pitch Propellers (FPP), Bearings and seals, Couplings and shaft alignment

* Ability to diagnose complex mechanical faults.

* Experience working onboard commercial vessels or within shipyards.

* Ability to read mechanical drawings and technical documentation.

* Strong mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills.

* Valid driver’s license and passport (or ability to obtain one).

Preferred Qualifications

* Marine engineering qualification or mechanical engineering background.

* Experience working with propulsion manufacturers such as Wärtsilä, Kongsberg, Schottel, Rolls Royce/MTU, Brunvoll, Berg Propulsion, MAN Energy Solutions, or similar OEMs.

* Experience performing laser shaft alignment and vibration analysis.

* Familiarity with dry dock repair projects and vessel commissioning.

* Knowledge of classification society requirements (ABS, DNV, Lloyd’s Register, Bureau Veritas, ClassNK, etc.).

Travel Requirements

* Approximately 50% travel throughout the year.

* Domestic and international travel to ports, shipyards, and customer facilities.

* Flexibility to respond to urgent vessel breakdowns and scheduled service projects.
