Ship Superintendent

Location: Gloucester City, New Jersey

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced and motivated Ship Superintendent to oversee vessel loading and unloading operations at a busy marine terminal. The successful candidate will supervise stevedoring activities, coordinate personnel and resources, and ensure all cargo operations are completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with productivity standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Direct, supervise, and assign work to stevedoring personnel.
  • Monitor vessel loading and unloading operations to ensure safety and productivity requirements are met.
  • Coordinate cargo handling sequences and day-to-day operational activities.
  • Monitor employee attendance and address personnel or operational issues as they arise.
  • Maintain a strong focus on workplace safety and actively participate in safety programs.
  • Coordinate with internal departments, customers, vessel agents, and vendors.
  • Identify potential operational issues and take proactive steps to prevent delays or disruptions.
  • Maintain accurate correspondence and operational documentation.
  • Use Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and internal company systems to support daily operations.
  • Provide strong leadership and direction to teams working in a fast-paced terminal environment.
  • Work night and weekend shifts as required.

Qualifications

  • Previous experience in vessel operations, stevedoring, marine terminals, or cargo handling is preferred.
  • Strong leadership and supervisory skills with the ability to manage and direct groups of employees.
  • Excellent communication, customer service, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to anticipate potential issues and follow through with solutions.
  • Positive attitude with the ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Ability to quickly learn internal computer and operational systems.
  • Must be able to work in a fast-paced, safety-focused environment.
  • Ability to work flexible schedules, including nights and weekends, as required.
  • Must have, or be able to obtain, a TWIC card.
