Key responsibilities
- Preventative maintenance: Conduct routine checks and maintenance to prevent system failures.
- Troubleshooting and repair: Diagnose and fix faults in BESS and related components.
- Commissioning: Support the initial setup and testing of new systems.
- Electrical testing: Perform electrical testing and inspections to ensure systems are working correctly and safely.
- Performance monitoring: Monitor system performance and implement software updates.
- Safety and compliance: Ensure all work adheres to safety regulations, such as BS7671 standards, and perform risk assessments.
- Support: Provide remote and on-site diagnostics and customer support.
- Documentation and reporting: Manage spare parts, maintain records, and provide daily reports.
Required qualifications and skills
Essential qualifications and skills
- Electrical foundation: A strong background in electrical work is fundamental. This can be a formal qualification like an apprenticeship or a technical diploma.
- BESS-specific training:
- Specialized courses and certifications are often required to work with battery energy storage systems (BESS).
- Experience with specific technologies like lithium-ion batteries and inverters is crucial.
- High-voltage expertise: A deep understanding of high-voltage equipment, AC/DC circuitry, and safety protocols like lockout/tagout (LOTO) is necessary to handle the dangers of these systems.
- Software and monitoring skills: Proficiency in using software for data monitoring, diagnostics, and system analysis is essential, as is familiarity with SCADA systems.
- Knowledge of battery management systems (BMS): Understanding how to work with and maintain battery management systems is vital for monitoring performance and safety.
Beneficial qualifications and experience
- Experience: 2-4 years of hands-on experience with electrical or renewable energy systems.
- Renewable energy knowledge: Familiarity with renewable energy technologies and how they integrate into the grid is important for understanding the context of BESS.
- Regulatory knowledge: Awareness of industry standards, codes (such as IEEE and NEC), and compliance requirements is necessary for safe and legal installations.
- Additional certifications: Project management and quality management certifications can be beneficial for senior or supervisory roles, while environmental certifications may also be required for certain projects.
