PIC Packager

Location: Canada (Hybrid/On-site)
Position Type: Full-Time

A well-funded deep-tech startup developing advanced photonic manufacturing technologies is looking for a Photonics Packager to support the fabrication and assembly of next-generation photonic devices. Working within a hands-on R&D environment, you will help build and package integrated photonic assemblies incorporating optical fibres, silicon photonic chips and electronic components.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys laboratory-based work, precision assembly and developing scalable manufacturing processes for advanced photonic technologies.

What You’ll Do

  • Assemble and package photonic devices using precision microfabrication and packaging techniques.
  • Perform die attach, wire bonding, optical alignment, encapsulation and related assembly processes.
  • Operate cleanroom fabrication and metrology equipment to manufacture and inspect devices.
  • Test and characterise fabricated assemblies while monitoring process performance and quality.
  • Produce process documentation, technical reports and manufacturing records.
  • Collaborate with engineering, manufacturing and product development teams to support prototype and product builds.
  • Maintain materials inventory and coordinate shipment of components when required.

Required Qualifications

  • Diploma or degree in Engineering Technology, Photonics, Applied Science, Electronics, Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
  • 2+ years of hands-on experience in photonic, semiconductor or microfabrication environments.
  • Experience working in a cleanroom using micro- or nanofabrication processes.
  • Hands-on experience with photonic or semiconductor device fabrication and packaging.
  • Strong manual dexterity and attention to detail when handling miniature components.
  • Experience using CAD software such as SolidWorks, OnShape or AutoCAD.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work within multidisciplinary engineering teams.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in photonics, semiconductor or advanced manufacturing environments.
  • Knowledge of silicon photonics packaging and hybrid integration.
  • Python experience for equipment automation or data analysis.
  • Experience working within an R&D, startup or fast-paced product development environment.
