Job Description

We are seeking a skilled Journeyman Electrician (or equivalent experience) to take on a full-time position as a Marine Electrician Lead. This role involves leading and actively participating in projects focused on the upgrade, installation, and development of electrical systems for marine vessels and floating structures, including cargo ships, fishing vessels, barges, and tugs.

The successful candidate will act as the Electrician of Record (EoR), taking ownership of projects from initial RFQ through to installation, testing, commissioning, and compliance. This position requires delivering high-quality work that meets client specifications, often within tight deadlines.

Projects may include a broad range of electrical work such as shore power systems, alternative marine power solutions, crane electrical supply, hydraulic and communication systems, terminal power infrastructure, and other vessel-based or floating electrical systems. Work is typically carried out on-site, both dockside and offshore. The role may also involve custom switchboard and control panel builds, including emergency systems, motor controllers, and specialised control units.

Key Requirements

  • Minimum 5 years’ experience installing, maintaining, and operating electrical systems on commercial vessels (e.g. tugboats, container ships, barges)
  • Shipyard experience with strong knowledge of industry safety standards and OSHA regulations
  • Experience with lockout/tagout procedures
  • Solid understanding of electrical theory and principles
  • Proficiency using testing equipment such as multimeters
  • Strong mathematical skills (including basic calculations and order of operations)
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics and circuit diagrams
  • Experience working with 480VAC three-phase systems (grounded and ungrounded)
  • Knowledge of load calculations, Ohm’s Law, and cable sizing
  • Experience with electric motors, motor circuits, and motor controllers
  • Familiarity with Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) and soft starters

Technical Assessment (Interview Stage)

  • Identify components within an electrical schematic
  • Demonstrate understanding of Ohm’s Law
  • Perform a motor load calculation
  • Draw a basic motor control circuit

General Requirements

  • Valid driver’s licence and reliable transportation
  • Ability to obtain required port/security clearance (e.g. TWIC or equivalent)
  • Must supply personal hand tools (specialised tools provided)
  • Professional attitude and ability to work effectively with diverse teams
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and professional appearance in line with site safety standards

Working Environment

  • Primarily shipyard and vessel-based work environments
  • Standard start time typically early morning
  • Overtime and weekend work may be required, often at short notice
  • Periods of high workload may involve extended hours, particularly during peak seasons
