About the Opportunity

My client is an innovative technology organisation developing advanced solutions within the photonics and semiconductor industries.

They are looking to appoint a Photonic Circuit Design Engineer to contribute to the development of next-generation integrated photonic technologies. The role will involve taking ownership of photonic design projects, covering simulation, device development, layout, verification and fabrication.

The successful candidate will work alongside engineers across several disciplines to deliver complex photonic solutions.

Key Responsibilities

• Collaborate with external fabrication partners throughout the chip development process.

• Develop and optimise integrated photonic components, including waveguides, optical couplers, detectors and modulators.

• Support optical and electrical performance validation at system level.

• Take ownership of design verification, including DRC/LVS and layout optimisation.

• Work with packaging specialists to address integration and assembly requirements.

• Lead photonic circuit development from initial modelling through to manufacturing tape-out.

• Support device testing and characterisation alongside measurement engineers.

Requirements

• Strong background in silicon photonics and integrated optical device physics.

• Minimum of 5 years’ experience in photonic integrated circuit design.

• Experience taking photonic devices from initial design through to fabrication.

• Familiarity with industry-standard photonic design and simulation environments, including Lumerical, Cadence, Synopsys or KLayout.

• Ability to work across multidisciplinary engineering teams.

• Relevant industry experience, although candidates with a PhD or postdoctoral research background in photonics will also be considered.

Desirable Experience

• Understanding of high-speed optical modulation technologies.

• Exposure to advanced photonic packaging and electronic integration.

• Experience with co-packaged optical technologies.
