Master
My client is specialized in coastal and inland waterway transportation, operating a diverse fleet consisting of general cargo coasters, pusher tugs and push barges.
The company’s primary market focus is on European inland waterways and offer a full spectrum of maritime logistics services, including chartering, transport, stock management, and storage solutions.
My client is searching for a highly qualified and experienced Master to take command of their general cargo coaster operations on a 4-month rotation.
The ideal candidate will possess a valid Certificate of Competency, have extensive experience with the specific vessel type, and demonstrate a deep understanding of the company’s Safety Management System (SMS). This role demands strong leadership to oversee the crew, ensure compliance with safety and environmental policies, and manage daily operational tasks such as voyage planning, stowage, and stability calculations.
The Master will be expected to follow duties outlined in the Duties Matrix provided by the company, maintain a well-organized system for reporting and record-keeping, and coordinate with the company on any arising issues related to safety or operation.
Key Responsibilities:
- Vessel Command: Responsible for the safe operation of the vessel, making decisions regarding safety, security, and pollution prevention with overriding authority.
- Safety and Environmental Leadership: Implement the company’s safety and environmental-protection policies. Motivate crew members to adhere to these standards, issue clear instructions, and lead by example.
- Safety Management System (SMS): Ensure the correct use of the company’s SMS, conducting periodic checks and reviews. Identify any deficiencies and report them to the ISM Manager, suggesting improvements as needed.
- Crew Management: Oversee the crew’s workload, ensuring compliance with work and rest hour regulations while maintaining high safety standards. Mustering crew members, arranging additional training as necessary, and maintaining records using the standard form “Sign-on crewmember.”
- Operational Oversight: Review voyage planning, stowage plans, and stability calculations to ensure they meet all safety and operational requirements.
- Certification and Documentation: Monitor vessel and crew certificates, ensuring timely renewals and reporting expiration dates to the company.
- Workload and Manning: Monitor crew workload, ensuring that actual working conditions are appropriate. The Master must notify the company if adjustments to crew numbers or qualifications are required for safe operations.
Qualifications:
- Valid Certificate of Competency for the Master’s role.
- Strong understanding and experience with the company’s SMS.
- Excellent command of the English language, both written and verbal.
- Proven leadership abilities, with a focus on crew safety and environmental protection.
- Familiarity with voyage planning, stability calculations, and technical vessel management.
