Trailer Mechanic / Welder
Position Summary
We are seeking an experienced Trailer Mechanic / Welder to perform preventative and corrective maintenance on chassis and trailers used in national and international shipping operations. The successful candidate will be responsible for diagnosing defects, completing structural and mechanical repairs, performing advanced welding, and ensuring equipment meets DOT and company safety standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Diagnose and repair chassis and trailer defects, including ABS/air brake systems, wheel ends, axles, landing gear, electrical systems, and structural components.
- Perform structural repairs and replacements involving chassis necks, rear-end assemblies, and L-beams.
- Disassemble, repair, and replace axles, brake systems, landing gear, and other chassis components.
- Perform Stick and MIG welding for structural repairs and parts assembly.
- Conduct chassis inspections to ensure compliance with DOT regulations.
- Complete electrical repairs and inspections as required.
- Use handheld devices to document inspections, repairs, and work orders.
- Safely operate forklifts and other shop equipment.
- Assist with container repairs when needed.
- Maintain a clean and safe work area.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum 2 years of welding experience working on chassis or trailers.
- Advanced Stick and MIG welding skills.
- Strong knowledge of chassis and trailer maintenance and repair procedures.
- Ability to troubleshoot mechanical, structural, brake, and electrical issues.
- Basic English communication skills, including the ability to read, write, and process alphanumeric information.
- Strong organizational, time-management, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently with limited supervision.
- Ability to work extended hours, weekends, and holidays as needed.
- Must have, or be able to obtain, a TWIC card within 30 days of employment.
Safety Responsibilities
- Follow all company safety policies and procedures.
- Wear required PPE.
- Report safety hazards, incidents, injuries, illnesses, and property damage immediately.
- Refuse unsafe work or operations.
- Participate in required safety meetings and training.
- Maintain awareness of personal and coworker safety.
Physical & Working Conditions
This is a physically demanding role requiring regular standing, walking, bending, kneeling, climbing, reaching, lifting, and repetitive hand and wrist movements. Candidates must be able to frequently lift up to 30 lbs and occasionally lift up to 50 lbs.
The role involves working outdoors in varying weather conditions, including heat, rain, wind, and high humidity. Employees may also be exposed to moving mechanical equipment, dust, fumes, chemicals, high noise levels, and vibration.
Reporting Structure
This position reports directly to the M&R Supervisor and M&R Manager and may assist other mechanics with chassis and container repairs. This position does not have direct supervisory responsibility.
