Shipyard Painter/ Sandblasting Superintendent
Position Summary
The Industrial Painting & Sandblasting Superintendent is responsible for leading all aspects of surface preparation, coating application, and finishing operations across shipyard and heavy industrial projects. This role drives execution by overseeing field personnel, subcontractors, and resources to ensure work is completed safely, efficiently, and in full compliance with project specifications and regulatory standards. The Superintendent plays a critical role in maintaining quality, optimizing productivity, and delivering projects on schedule and within budget while fostering a strong safety and performance culture.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and supervise all daily blasting, surface preparation, and coating operations across assigned projects
- Plan and allocate manpower, equipment, and materials to meet project schedules and production targets
- Oversee surface prep activities including abrasive blasting, cleaning, masking, and containment setup
- Ensure proper application of coatings including primers, intermediates, and final systems per specifications
- Monitor project progress, productivity, and labor efficiency; adjust plans to maintain schedule and budget
- Inspect work in progress and completed coatings to ensure compliance with quality standards and client requirements
- Enforce compliance with all safety, environmental, and regulatory requirements (OSHA, EPA, site-specific rules)
- Coordinate closely with project managers, QA/QC, and other trades to ensure seamless workflow and execution
- Manage subcontractors and vendors, ensuring performance aligns with contract scope and company standards
- Maintain accurate reporting including daily logs, production tracking, material usage, and progress updates
Qualifications & Requirements
- 5+ years of experience in industrial painting, blasting, or coatings within shipyard or heavy industrial environments
- Minimum 2+ years of leadership or supervisory experience managing crews and/or subcontractors
- Strong knowledge of surface preparation standards, coating systems, and application techniques
- Familiarity with industry standards such as SSPC, NACE, and relevant coating specifications
- Proven ability to manage schedules, manpower planning, and production targets in a fast-paced environment
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, coating specifications, and safety data sheets (SDS)
- Experience overseeing containment systems, environmental controls, and waste handling procedures
- Strong leadership, communication, and team management skills
- Proficiency with basic computer systems and reporting tools (e.g., Excel, daily reporting software)
- Demonstrated commitment to safety, quality, and continuous improvement in field operations
