The client is an industry leader within the substation engineering field, and are seeking an electrical engineer to take on a role in the ‘earthing’ and ‘soil’ department, for an exciting new position which brings the opportunity to climb the internal ladder with a global giant.
You’ll help design safe, reliable earthing systems for HV substations and overhead lines (AC/HVDC). Working with senior engineers, you’ll turn soil data, fault duties, and site constraints into robust ground grid designs, step/touch voltage assessments, and constructible drawings. Expect a mix of desktop studies, site surveys, and construction support.
What you’ll do
- Plan and execute soil resistivity and earthing integrity measurements (Wenner/Schlumberger, fall-of-potential, clamp-on).
- Build multilayer soil models and calculate grid current splits for faults and lightning.
- Design substation ground grids (mesh, rods, grading rings, surface layers) to meet step/touch voltage limits and GPR criteria.
- Engineer tower footings/counterpoise and OHL earthing, including seasonal variation and corrosion considerations.
- Perform bonding & lightning protection checks (shielding angles, down-conductors, equipotential bonding).
- Assess induced/transfer potentials (e.g., between HV yards, control buildings, and nearby utilities/pipelines) and propose mitigations.
- Produce calculations, drawings, BoQs, and method statements; support site teams during installation and testing.
- Work to relevant standards and client specs and contribute to continuous improvement.
Must have requirements:
- Electrical Engineering, Power Engineering, or like-minded area of education
- Solid grasp of circuit theory and EM fundamentals related to grounding and safety
- The ability to perform clear, concise technical writing in German and English
Nice to have:
- Short-circuit data handling from ETAP or DIgSILENT PowerFactory (importing fault duties, current division).
- CYMGRD (CYME), COMSOL Multiphysics (FEM), or EMTP-RV/PSCAD for transient/lightning studies.
- GIS (QGIS/ArcGIS) for route studies and soil/land-use overlays.
- Version control (Git) for models/scripts.
